Superior Skilled Trades is partnered with a growing industrial electrical services company based in Tampa, Florida, specializing in transformer maintenance, refurbishment, electrical testing, and power distribution solutions.

We are seeking a hands-on Transformer Shop Refurbishment Technician to support the dismantling, inspection, repair, reassembly, and testing of small- and medium-sized substation and transmission-class power transformers in a controlled shop environment.

This is an excellent opportunity for a technician with transformer experience who enjoys hands-on mechanical and electrical work and wants to build their expertise in transformer refurbishment and testing.

Position Summary

The Transformer Shop Refurbishment Technician will be responsible for disassembling used transformers, inspecting and repairing components, performing core and tank refurbishment, reprocessing transformer oil, reassembling units, and conducting electrical and mechanical testing.

The ideal candidate has hands-on transformer experience, understands transformer components and testing procedures, and can safely use hand tools, lifting equipment, and electrical test instruments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Disassemble single-phase and three-phase transformers for inspection and refurbishment
  • Inspect transformer components and identify worn, damaged, or defective parts
  • Repair or replace transformer components as needed
  • Clean and treat transformer cores, coils, and tanks using approved chemicals and processes
  • Perform core iron inspection, cleaning, and repair
  • Reprocess, purify, and handle transformer insulating oil
  • Refill and finish transformer tanks following established procedures
  • Perform electrical and mechanical testing on refurbished transformer units
  • Troubleshoot electrical and mechanical issues during the refurbishment process
  • Prepare completed transformers for repainting, labeling, and final inspection
  • Maintain accurate refurbishment reports, test logs, and required documentation
  • Follow applicable safety procedures and industry standards throughout the refurbishment process
  • Safely operate hand tools, lifting equipment, forklifts, overhead cranes, and electrical test equipment
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Trade school or technical certificate in electrical repair or a related field preferred
  • 1–3 years of hands-on transformer refurbishment or repair experience
  • Working knowledge of transformer components, wiring diagrams, and electrical testing methods
  • Ability to safely use hand tools, lifting equipment, and electrical test instruments
  • Ability to troubleshoot electrical and mechanical faults
  • Experience handling transformer insulating oils preferred
  • Ability to follow strict safety procedures when working around electrical equipment
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a controlled shop environment

Preferred Technical Skills

  • Familiarity with vacuum drying processes
  • Experience with transformer oil purification
  • Knowledge of transformer tank welding or repair techniques
  • Understanding of ANSI, IEEE, and NETA standards related to transformer servicing
  • Forklift experience or certification
  • Overhead crane experience or certification
  • Experience with core and coil handling and refurbishment

Compensation & Benefits

  • $40–$60 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications
