Superior Skilled Trades is partnered with a rapidly growing industrial electrical service contractor based in Tampa, Florida, specializing in transformer maintenance, electrical testing, electrical construction, and electrical distribution systems.

We are seeking an experienced Transformer Assembly Oversight Technician to provide field oversight of power transformer assembly, installation, quality control, and testing activities at customer sites nationwide.

This is a national travel position ideal for an experienced transformer professional who enjoys working in the field and has strong technical knowledge, attention to detail, and a commitment to quality and safety.

Position Summary

The Transformer Assembly Oversight Technician will oversee field assembly of power transformers and ensure work is completed in accordance with OEM manuals, engineering drawings, torque specifications, work instructions, and quality requirements.

This role serves as a technical and quality-focused resource throughout transformer assembly, installation, oil processing, inspection, testing, and commissioning activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee field assembly of power transformers in accordance with OEM manuals, drawings, torque charts, and work instructions
  • Verify critical assembly steps, including tank inspection, core and coil handling, tap changer installation, bushing assembly, gasket preparation, conservator/radiator installation, cooling systems, oil processing, vacuum dry-out, and final checks
  • Witness and document inspections, hold points, and testing in accordance with ITP/QCP requirements
  • Review manufacturer specifications, drawings, wiring diagrams, schematics, and field change notices
  • Confirm torque values, clearances, alignment, material certificates, serial numbers, and BOM traceability
  • Maintain daily reports, photo documentation, punch lists, NCRs, and corrective action records
  • Ensure proper cleanliness, moisture control, and contamination prevention throughout assembly
  • Monitor oil handling and processing activities, including vacuum filling, degasification, and dehydration
  • Witness field testing and verify results meet established acceptance criteria
  • Confirm test instruments are properly calibrated
  • Identify and escalate quality issues, deviations, and non-conforming work
  • Support functional and point-to-point checks of transformer controls and auxiliaries
  • Coordinate with customers, OEM representatives, contractors, field crews, and project management
  • Promote safe work practices and compliance with electrical and job-site safety requirements

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of hands-on transformer assembly experience
  • Medium- or large-power transformer experience strongly preferred
  • Significant distribution transformer assembly experience may be considered
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, wiring diagrams, schematics, and OEM documentation
  • Strong understanding of transformer assembly, inspection, and quality requirements
  • Experience documenting inspections, deficiencies, punch lists, and corrective actions
  • Experience with CMMS or quality management systems preferred
  • Familiarity with NCR/CAPA workflows preferred
  • Basic understanding of SCADA and relay interfaces for transformer auxiliaries and controls
  • Basic multimeter skills
  • Exposure to NDT fundamentals preferred
  • Strong communication, documentation, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability and willingness to travel extensively nationwide

Preferred Certifications & Training

  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30
  • NFPA 70E training
  • Rigging and Signaling
  • First Aid/CPR

Compensation & Benefits

Work Environment

  • Based out of Tampa, FL, with extensive national travel
  • Work performed at electrical, industrial, utility, and transformer facilities throughout the U.S.
  • Field-based role working around large electrical equipment and active construction and maintenance operations
  • Extended travel and time away from home may be required based on project schedules
  • Must be comfortable working in industrial environments and varying weather conditions
  • Strict adherence to safety procedures, PPE requirements, and customer site requirements is expected
