Testing Engineer III – Electrical Testing & Commissioning

$40–$50/HR | Direct Hire Opportunity

Superior Skilled Trades is partnered with a company seeking an experienced Testing Engineer III to lead advanced electrical testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting activities for industrial power systems.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced electrical testing professional who can work independently, lead field testing activities, and mentor junior technicians.

Responsibilities

  • Perform testing and commissioning of:
    • Circuit breakers and load break switches
    • Contactors
    • Power transformers
    • Protective relays
    • Switchgear and associated control systems
  • Develop transformer test files using DTA software.
  • Create and execute relay test plans based on protection schemes and project requirements.
  • Analyze relay operations and troubleshoot protection systems.
  • Interpret one-line diagrams, schematics, specifications, and relay settings.
  • Lead field testing activities and coordinate testing schedules.
  • Document test results, deficiencies, recommendations, and customer updates.
  • Mentor junior testing engineers and apprentices.
  • Ensure testing activities meet NETA standards and customer specifications.

Qualifications

  • 5–10 years of electrical testing, commissioning, or field service experience.
  • Strong understanding of protective relays and electrical protection systems.
  • Experience developing and executing relay test plans.
  • Advanced transformer testing experience.
  • Experience with DTA and PowerDB.
  • Ability to independently lead testing and commissioning projects.
  • Experience with secondary injection, breaker timing, contact resistance, insulation resistance, and related testing methods.
  • Ability to read one-line diagrams, schematics, wiring drawings, and relay settings.
  • Strong troubleshooting and technical documentation skills.
  • NETA Level II certification preferred/required.
  • Willingness to pursue NETA Level III certification.
  • Experience working safely with electrical hazards, LOTO, and customer-specific safety requirements.
  • Aggregate, mining, industrial, utility, or substation experience is a plus.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on electrical testing professional who can independently troubleshoot complex power systems, communicate findings to customers, and lead field testing activities with minimal supervision.

Experience with protective relays, transformers, breakers, switchgear, and industrial power distribution is highly valued.
