Position Overview
This is a Direct Hire Opportunity.
As a Lead Test Technician, you will be responsible for performing advanced electrical testing and validation on high-voltage transformers to ensure compliance with engineering specifications, customer requirements, and IEEE standards. This is a highly technical, hands-on role requiring expertise in electrical testing, troubleshooting, and data analysis.
You will work with high-energy systems (up to 1 million volts), configure test setups, interpret results, and support customer witness testing when required.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform electrical and mechanical testing on power transformers and components
- Set up and operate test equipment including Hi-Pot, impulse generators, SFRA, oscilloscopes, and power factor test kits
- Verify transformer controls, instrumentation, and programmable systems
- Execute tests such as:
- Turns Ratio & Polarity
- Insulation Resistance & Power Factor
- DC Resistance, Core Loss, Impedance & Load Loss
- Induced & Applied Potential
- Impulse Testing (up to 1M V)
- Interpret test data, identify issues, and determine root cause solutions
- Generate NCRs (non-conformance reports) for quality issues
- Perform equipment calibration, maintenance, and minor repairs
- Prepare electronic test reports, charts, and trend analysis
- Conduct final inspections and sign-offs (electrical & mechanical)
- Support customer witness testing as needed
- Maintain a clean, safe work environment and follow all safety protocols, including arc flash procedures
Qualifications
Required:
- One of the following:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE or equivalent), OR
- Associate’s degree in electrical field with related experience, OR
- High school diploma/GED with 3–4+ years of electrical testing or QA experience
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, blueprints, and specifications
- Hands-on experience with electrical testing equipment (multimeters, voltmeters, etc.)
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Commitment to safety in high-voltage environments
Preferred:
- Experience with transformer testing or high-voltage equipment
- Familiarity with:
- SFRA (Sweep Frequency Response Analysis)
- Impulse and dielectric testing
- Omicron or similar testing systems
- Prior experience in power generation, utilities, or heavy electrical manufacturing
Physical Demands
- Work at ground level and at heights on large equipment (6+ feet high)
- Use ladders and access elevated surfaces of transformers
- Lift and handle tools, test equipment, and materials
- Wear arc flash PPE and electrically rated gloves
- Work in industrial environments with exposure to electrical hazards
- Stand, walk, and move for extended periods during testing procedures
